Highest-Paying CDL Jobs in the U.S.

Where the top earners are: oversize/specialized, oilfield, ice road, fuel hauling, and elite private fleets.

The headline median for U.S. truck drivers is about $54,320 — but the top quartile of CDL holders earn substantially more, and the top 5% can clear $130,000+ annually. Understanding where the high-pay categories are helps experienced drivers plan a 5- to 10-year career trajectory.

Oversize and specialized hauling

Wind-energy components, transformers, mining equipment, modular buildings, military vehicles. Specialized carriers (Anderson Trucking, Heyl Truck Lines, Daseke companies) pay $0.85 to $1.30/mile for company drivers, with annual gross of $90,000 to $145,000. Requires extensive endorsement stack and 3 to 5 years of OTR experience to qualify.

Oilfield and energy

Frac sand hauling, water hauling, equipment hauling for upstream oil and gas operations. Pay is often hourly ($28 to $48/hour) plus extensive overtime. Annual gross of $95,000 to $160,000 is achievable in active basins (Permian, Bakken, Eagle Ford). Highly cyclical with oil prices; layoffs common in downturns.

Ice-road and Alaska seasonal

Operating ice roads to remote Arctic mining and oil sites runs December through March. Per-mile rates are 2x to 4x normal OTR rates because of the extreme conditions and short season. Drivers typically gross $70,000 to $120,000 in 4 months. Requires extensive winter-driving experience and tolerance for isolated work conditions.

Fuel hauling

Local petroleum delivery (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel) is among the highest-paying daily-home-time jobs in trucking. Major carriers (Kenan Advantage, Quality Distribution, Trimac, World Fuel Services) pay $32 to $48/hour for local urban fuel hauling. Annual gross of $85,000 to $115,000 is typical, with full benefits. Requires Tank (N) + Hazmat (H) endorsements.

Elite private fleets

Walmart, Sysco, US Foods, Frito-Lay, Costco, large grocery chains. Pay is in the $85,000 to $110,000 range with exceptional benefits, predictable schedules, and excellent equipment. Hiring requirements are high (3+ years experience, clean record).

LTL line-haul

FedEx Freight, Old Dominion, Estes, Saia, ABF, R+L. Senior union or non-union LTL line-haul drivers earn $80,000 to $115,000 with strong benefits and pensions. Requires Doubles/Triples (T) endorsement and willingness to work overnight schedules.

Owner-operator owner-authority

Operating your own MC authority and brokering your own freight can produce gross revenue of $250,000 to $400,000 annually for a single truck — but net depends entirely on cost discipline. Read our owner-operator math.
