CDL Cost — How Much Does It Really Cost?

Honest breakdown of total CDL cost: school, ELDT, DMV fees, medical card, endorsements.

The total cost of getting a Class A CDL in 2024–2025 ranges from about $1,200 (carrier-sponsored) to $10,000+ (private school). Most candidates spend $3,500 to $7,500 out-of-pocket. Here's a complete itemization so you can budget accurately.

CDL school / ELDT

Private CDL school: $4,000 to $7,500 for Class A, $2,500 to $5,000 for Class B-only. Community college: $1,500 to $4,500. Carrier-sponsored: typically free in exchange for a 1- to 2-year employment commitment with an early-departure repayment clause of $3,000 to $6,000 if you leave before completing the contract.

DMV / DPS fees

Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP): $15 to $40. Knowledge exam fee: $5 to $20 per exam (some states bundle multiple exams into a single fee). CDL issuance: $40 to $120. Skills test fee: $30 to $200 (often higher when administered by a third-party tester rather than the DMV directly).

Medical card (DOT physical)

$80 to $150 for the initial exam. Renews every 24 months (or 12 months under certain conditions). If you require additional specialist evaluations (cardiology, sleep medicine, endocrinology), expect $200 to $800 in additional out-of-pocket costs.

Endorsement add-ons

Hazmat (H): $86.50 federal TSA fee + $5 to $25 state knowledge exam fee + $5 to $40 endorsement fee. Recurring every 5 years. Tank (N), Doubles/Triples (T): $5 to $25 knowledge-exam fee, $5 to $40 endorsement fee. No recurring federal fee. Passenger (P), School Bus (S): knowledge-exam fee plus a separate skills-test fee in a representative passenger vehicle ($75 to $250 for the skills test).

Hidden costs

Background-check fees for carrier hiring ($25 to $75); pre-employment drug screen ($25 to $80, often paid by the carrier); CDL school equipment / textbooks ($100 to $400); transportation and lodging if your CDL school is not local ($500 to $2,500 over 4 to 8 weeks).
