Walmart Private Fleet — Pay, Schedule, and Hiring

Why Walmart's private fleet is widely considered the best driving job in trucking, and what it takes to get hired.

Walmart's private fleet — about 13,000 drivers as of 2024 — is consistently rated by industry surveys as one of the best truck-driving jobs in the United States. The pay, benefits, equipment, and home-time consistency are at the top of the industry. The hiring requirements are also among the most stringent.

Pay

Walmart's per-mile rate plus activity pay is structured to put first-year drivers in the high-$80s to mid-$90s ($87,500 to $95,000) annually as of 2024. Senior drivers (5+ years) earn $100,000+. Walmart pays per-mile plus an "activity pay" component for drop-and-hook, fueling, scaling, and post-trip duties — meaning drivers are paid for time on duty, not just driving time. Quarterly safety bonuses add $1,000 to $4,000.

Schedule

Most Walmart drivers run dedicated regional lanes that get them home weekly or every other day. The fleet is structured around delivering to Walmart distribution centers and stores on consistent schedules, so freight uncertainty is minimal compared to common-carrier work. Many drivers report 10 to 14 home-time days per month.

Equipment and benefits

Walmart runs late-model Freightliner Cascadias and International LTs, with full APU equipment, in-cab refrigerators, and dedicated trailer pools. Health insurance, dental, vision, 401(k) with match, paid time off, paid maternity/paternity leave, and Walmart's stock-purchase plan. Total compensation regularly exceeds $110,000 per year.

Hiring requirements

Minimum 2 years (typically 3 to 5 years for the most desirable lanes) of recent verifiable Class A OTR experience. Clean MVR (no DUIs, no major violations in past 5 years; no more than 2 minor moving violations in past 3 years). Clean PSP (no preventable accidents, minimal roadside-inspection violations). No bankruptcies in past 7 years. Clean Clearinghouse record. Successful completion of a comprehensive in-person evaluation including a road test.

How to get hired

Apply directly at Walmart Careers (drive4walmart.com). Walmart hires throughout the year but recruits most heavily in Q3 and Q4. Hiring is concentrated near Walmart's distribution-center locations (Bentonville AR, Bentonville-area DCs, and DCs across most major metros). Don't expect a quick hiring decision — Walmart's screening process typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from application to offer.

Comparable carriers

Other "best in class" private fleets include Sysco, US Foods, Frito-Lay, Costco, Halliburton (oilfield), and several large grocery chains. Most have similar pay structures and similar hiring rigor. Read our hiring guide.
