Hazmat vs. Tank vs. Doubles/Triples — The Three Premium Endorsements

Compare the three highest-leverage CDL endorsements for pay and career flexibility.

If you're a Class A driver looking for the maximum pay-per-effort ratio when adding endorsements, three options dominate the conversation: Hazmat (H), Tank (N), and Doubles/Triples (T). Each unlocks a distinct lane, and the highest earners in trucking typically hold all three.

Hazmat (H) — chemicals, fuel, dangerous goods

Hazmat alone adds about 5–10% to a Class A driver's annual pay. Combined with Tank as the "X" endorsement, it qualifies you for fuel hauling — among the highest-paying daily-home-time jobs in trucking, often $75,000 to $100,000+ for local routes. The catch is the TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprinting + federal background check, $90–$130, recurring every 5 years).

Tank (N) — liquid and bulk hauling

Tank alone adds 3–6%, but combined with Hazmat it unlocks fuel and chemical work. Tank also opens dry-bulk lanes (cement, sand, plastic pellets) and food-grade tanker (milk, juice, edible oils). No TSA check, no recurring federal fee. Easy to add, high return.

Doubles/Triples (T) — LTL line-haul

The T endorsement is the gateway to FedEx Freight, Old Dominion, Estes, Saia, ABF, and other major LTL carriers' line-haul operations. Senior LTL line-haul drivers earn $75,000 to $110,000 annually with strong benefits, dedicated lanes, and predictable schedules. T is knowledge-only with no extra federal requirements.

Stack all three

Adding all three endorsements typically costs less than $200 in state and federal fees combined and can be done in a single 2-week sprint of study and exams. Drivers who hold H, N, T, plus Air Brakes and Combination open virtually every freight lane in the country. Read our endorsements overview for the study path.
