Endorsement Compare

School Bus vs. Passenger — Which Pays Better?

School bus driver pay versus transit/charter bus driver pay, including benefits and total compensation.

If you've decided to drive people for a living instead of freight, the next question is which Passenger-class endorsement to anchor your career around: School Bus (S) or general Passenger (P). The pay comparison isn't a straight number-vs-number contest — it depends heavily on hours, benefits, and lifestyle.

School Bus pay

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median wage for school and special-client bus drivers (SOC 53-3051) of about $39,070 (May 2024 OEWS), with the top 10% earning over $55,000. Most school bus drivers work split shifts — about 4 to 6 hours per day — but many districts pay full benefits even for part-time driving, and full summers, holidays, and snow days off are standard. Total compensation including benefits can be competitive with a $55,000 to $65,000 full-time job.

Transit and charter Passenger pay

Transit bus drivers (SOC 53-3052) earn a median of about $54,170 (May 2024 OEWS), with the top 10% over $80,000. Major metro transit agencies (NYC MTA, Chicago CTA, LA Metro, SEPTA, MBTA, WMATA, BART, Sound Transit) pay $65,000 to $95,000 for senior drivers and offer full union benefits including pension. Charter and motorcoach drivers earn $42,000 to $68,000 with more variable schedules.

Which makes more total sense?

For pure annualized take-home cash, transit Passenger work wins clearly. For lifestyle (kids in school, summers off, predictable home time), School Bus wins clearly. Many drivers hold both endorsements and combine school routes during the academic year with charter or shuttle work in summers. How to add both

If you already hold a Class A or B CDL, you can add Passenger by passing the Passenger knowledge exam plus a behind-the-wheel skills test in a representative bus. School Bus requires the Passenger endorsement first, plus its own knowledge exam and a separate skills test in a representative school bus. Most candidates complete both in 2 to 6 weeks.
